Introducing Joley, our latest Airbnb guest who’s with us three weeks. She’s 18, born in Brighton, raised in Brooklyn and is fast-thinking and wise-cracking, more-or-less vegan and totally my kinda gal. I love it when life throws kindred spirits like this my way. I’m helping her settle back into Brighton to start a degree which means playing a bit of a mummy-role, and she has christened herself ‘rent-a-daughter’ as the relationship is beautifully symbiotic. Her bedroom is in chaos, (god knows how she can move in there) but she loves cats and is bringing a great energy into our little home. The house we grew up in. 40 Halford Road in Richmond as it is now, still with the graveyard behind where we used to shriek and jump on gravestones. Sometimes we’d get told off and my mother said ‘tell them your mummy says when she’s dead she hopes children play on her grave’. And here’s the sign where we posed in 1980, all full of punk chutzpah and teen energy. yesterday was quite some trip down memory lane.

In the Shakespeare’s Head with great mate Hattie, making ourselves cry with laughter at how like ‘Call My Agent’ our lives are right now. I’m in serious doubt as to whether anyone could make this sort of shit up. We also realised it’s a year since I published Mum’s memoir and Hat did the cover. Both our mums illustrated children’s books and in the week #jillmurphy died it seems fitting we met as Mum and Jill were also great friends.
