A Time to Remember, grieve and give thanks ❤️‍🩹

Good morning.

I don't know where you live or what time you will open this newsletter, but please give pause for thought. 80 years ago this week, Hiroshima was the first military target of a nuclear weapon in history. Most of Hiroshima was destroyed and by the end of the year, between 90,000 and 166,000 had died as a result of the blast.

Three days later, another bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki and 10% of the city's population were killed. A further 35,000 deaths. With shock and awe and mass destruction, World War II was finally over.

Victory in Japan came after Victory in Europe. Many of us know of the horrors of WWII in Europe but are less knowledgeable about the war in the Far East.

My mother, Mary Rayner, her brother, Stephen, and sister Ann lived through it. Thanks to the courage and determination of their mother, Yoma Grigson, they escaped on foot in 1942 over the mountains from Burma (now Myanmar) to India.

They gradually made their way to safety south where they stayed with their uncle until they were transported home to England by boat at the end of the war. My grandfather, Aubrey Grigson, stayed behind to fight the Japanese. What happened to him is truly tragic, and my mother's memoir, No More Tigers, tells that story.

I’m also aware that this week is the anniversary of VJ Day. 80 years ago WW2 ended with a ceasefire agreed between the Japanese and Americans. But they dropped two atomic bombs killing over 100,000 people to make it happen.
