Toasting Tom’s insurance settlement. We had to remortgage our home twice in the 19 months it took to reach an agreement with Aviva, the other party’s insurance firm. But we are grateful: he is still here. We always use my darling friend Katy’s glassware to mark special occasions. She passed away earlier this year, at 60. I and many others miss her hugely.

How cute are these? Look closely and you will see: they are not English language editions despite the title. They are DUTCH! They arrived in the post this morning. Pleasing, non?

Barcelona! Bierro! Margaritas. Miro. Cava. Picasso. Patterned pavements. It’s been two decades years but I love this city. Crass music in bars. Melting mountains as we drove in. Yes, my MX5 is still going strong. 108,000 miles now @_debbiefagan and thinking of you often. Sweet friends, my mama (who also had a red sports car) my darling Katy (whose was green), and my cousin @tinahampson1 who I first visited Barcelona with, in 1989, then again in 1993 (half my life ago) and finally in 2002 with Jonathan, my first funny Scottish husband.

Last but one day of loveliness in the Pyrenees. Sunday, Barcelona beckons. I’m excited to see one of my favourite cities, and show it to Tom, who has never been. But I’m sad too. I’m still being walloped by grief at losing Mum. I’m not doing well every day, and don’t want to fake jollity, which is so easy to do on social media. This afternoon I had to rest, I felt so ragged with exhaustion. #depression #grief #mothersanddaughters #roadtrip #mx5 #authorsofinstagram #mountainview
